The London Dungeon

By Verena Krüger

It was Monday, September 7, 1998, and we all were very tired from the previous day, but this was to be be our first day with planned events in London. When we arrived at the London Dungeon (near the Tower), our group had to split up because it was too big. Some of us went to see the H.M.S. Belfast, but most of us wanted to see the Dungeon first. This group was accompanied by Mr Stemmerich.

When we entered the house in which we were to become acquainted with the England of the Middle Ages we were immediately welcomed by a ghostly-looking person who took photos of our group at the entrance. A few minutes later, we entered the dark and cruel world of the Middle Ages, and when we saw the first wax figures with blood and intestines coming out of their stomachs we couldn’t imagine that such horrible views were the reality in those times.

In some showcases we could see some of the unbelievably cruel instruments that were used to kill people who didn’t even commit a crime (according to our definition of the word »crime«). After a time, we arrived at a kind of boat station were everyone had to enter a boat for driving through a sort of ghost train on the water.

When we could feel the ground under our feet again, we had to wait in front of a room because only small groups were allowed to enter. After a while a woman came and took us in. We stepped into a room that was made up like a courtroom where two persons told us we were to find Jack the Ripper. We started our journey through the mysterious world of the prostitute murderer. We heard about his victims and the way he killed them until we, a few students from Lünen, finally caught him and he had to die a bloody death under the guillotine.
