Highgate Cemetery

On Monday, the 7th of September 1998, the English «Achievement Course” of Mr A. Weinhold started its trip to Highgate Cemetery. After we had visited other important and famous places, e. g. Harrods and had gone to Oxford Street in order to go shopping, it was five o’clock.

Meanwhile, there were only six persons left who still felt strong enough to reach our destination. The others were too tired to continue or had gone off to see other sights of London. So these last six brave members of the course, including our great teacher Mr Weinhold, went to the underground station Oxford Circus. From there we travelled on the Victoria Line to Euston were we had to change the line. We took the Northern Line in order to reach Highgate. After we had passed a few stations our teacher noticed that we had travelled into the wrong direction. So we had to go back to Euston to take the other route. We had to leave the tube at Archway and walked the last »few meters«. In fact it was a walk of about 20 minutes straight uphill and we had to ask for the way several times. So we could also test our abilities of speaking English, but it was fun.

Finally we reached the cemetery at about quarter past six. It was a wonderful cemetery with old enchanted graves. The graves had a kind of magic and kept a kind of secret we could not discover. In fact the whole cemetery was very secluded and since we could not discover its inner secrets, we left the place. On our way back to our hotel we spent some time in a very beautiful park near the cemetery. We had already passed through it on our way to Highgate. We sat down on a bench upon a hill and enjoyed the silence and the last warm sparkles of the sun before we went back to the Regent Palace Hotel.
