The Imperial War Museum By Andreas Potowski But what you could see there was amazing. We reached the front yard and were faced by two large 38 cm guns from the HMS Resolution and the HMS Ramillies. The large Exhibits Gallery on the ground floor was the setting of some important tanks, aircrafts and weapons. It enclosed a German Jagdpanther tank destroyer of World War II, V1 and V2 rockets and a Focke Wulf 190 of the German Airforce during the Second World War. The lower ground floor offered a great exhibition of both World Wars to us. I am really sorry to tell you that we only had the time to inspect the exhibition of World War II and a small part of the one about the First World War. In both exhibitions you could find everything about war you can imagine. Weapons, uniforms and every kind of equipment is shown there in a very interesting way. Finally we took part in the World War II Blitz Experience. The Blitz Experience is a carefully researched reconstruction of an air-raid shelter and a blitzed street in 1940. Appropriate sights, sounds and smells evoke for visitors a sensation of being caught in the bombing of London during the Second World War. The other experience was called »The Trench«. It is one of the principal features of the First World War exhibition. It is a walk-through re-creation of a front line trench on the Somme in the autumn of 1916. Visitors can experience at first hand what it was like to be a tommy in the trenches. The re-creation is brought to life with special lightning, sound and smell effects, which makes you wonder if it is an exhibition or if you really are in combat. It was really a pity that we were not able to inspect the other two floors as well. Exhibitions of art, secret war and conflicts after 1945 were shown here, so maybe this could be a reason to travel to London again and inspect the rest of this amazing and interesting museum.
