London by night By Christoph Rodorff and Sebastian Trocha Restaurants are pretty expensive if you like to have a nice warm meal. But sometimes you get lucky and find yourself in a neat Italian restaurant in Soho with a piano-player who is singing while he is playing his instrument. Afterwards it is recommended to go to a pub to get the night started with. After having a pint, or maybe two and more of Lager, Guinness etc. there are dance and live jazz clubs. (If you want to see a musical you have to hurry because they ususally start around 8 pm.) There are so many different clubs that you can find in such a big city. We really enjoyed one dance club. It is called«The Limelight and it is located somewhere in the heart of Soho. On Mondays you get in free if you arrive before 11 pm. This is not a club you know from home. The way in is shown by a red carpet and cannot be missed because of the four black, big, heavy, and tall security guards who tell the people if they are dressed properly or if they are old enough to get in. (You have to be at least 20 to get in, otherwise dress well and do not look straight into their eyes it is worth a try!) And finally you go inside, more«black guys watching the visitors coming in, you look up, and you will notice that you are in an old church and all there young Londoners dance like crazy to the hip chart music, which the D. J. announces everytime with a lot of energy. It is fascinating to be in this old church, with the dome and all these different coloured lights that give everything a futuristic touch. On another evening we preferred to take it easy and listened to some live jazz music. The name of this club is not hard to remember. It is called «Club100, where the Rolling Stones used to play in the 60s, and it can be found on Oxford Street No. 100! (If you use the Underground you get out at Tottenham Court Road and walk towards the subway station Oxford Circus. On the way you will see a red sign on your left saying «CLUB100.) For five pounds you can enjoy the best live jazz music of the city. After clubbing, pubbing all night long it is nice to take a little walk around Picadilly Circus before you go to sleep. Thinking about the day, watching the guys, starting to clean the streets with their little green cute «golf carts and maybe starting a conversation with them will give you a real good view on what is beneath this »garment« of superficial impressions you get as a tourist. And perhaps you stop at a café, if it is not too late there still are many open, and sit down, have a drink and then go home expecting the next day to be even better than the one that has just been finished.
